BCS ICT fair ends with huge response

With a view to using computer as a tool for culturing merit and knowledge, a five-day BCS ICT World 2008 computer fair ended on Friday with huge response. Sales in the fair has crossed Tk 70 crore as most of the companies participating in the fair have offered discounts on their products, organizers claimed on Friday.
The fair gained momentum yesterday as it was a holiday and the last day of the fair of the five-day event. A huge gathering and more sales were seen in the fair.
Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS), President Mustafa Jabbar said the fair is mainly organized to promote brands, but they are very pleased with the sales figures. “We got immense response from visitors and at least 30 thousand people flocked to the fair on the concluding day,” he said.
Shamsul Islam sales executive of Flora, a participant in the fair, said, “We are offering discounts of up to Tk 1,500 to Tk 2,000 in different brands,” adding “His Company has always high sales revenue at such fairs. The majority of the buyers belong to the younger generation.”
Mustafa Jabbar said the global market for the low-priced laptops widened by 60 percent last year, which influenced the local market.
“Laptops are becoming more popular among business people and students, as the prices of those portable items have come down in the international market,” he said.
As many as nine international brands including Asus, HP, Toshiba, BenQ, Samsung, SR, Great Wall and Sony have brought low-priced laptops in the local market.
Moshiur Rahman Tushar, Director of Miracom Technologies, local agent for Chinese laptop Great Wall, said his organization has sold out a good number of laptops, mainly to several corporate clients, such as real estate and insurance companies. He said developers are now mulling to gift such laptops to the buyers booking flats or plots.
Great Wall laptops were available at Tk 29,500 with a mobile processor of 1.6 Giga hartz and 10.2 inches monitor, which is considered to be the most competitive price at the fair. BenQ also sold laptops at Tk 35,000.
“We are selling multimedia PC only at Tk 18,500 at the fair, down from Tk 20, 500,” said Forkan Bin Kasem of Spectrum Engineering Consortium Limited.
“As computer technology changes fast, we may fall behind if we do not keep track regularly,” said Rahul Sarker, a computer science student of a private University. He said he was planning to buy a low-priced laptop after surveying the discount packages of several companies.
Different types of clone and branded computer accessories including mouse, CDs, key boards, speakers, CD rom drives, MP 3, MP 4, digital cameras, printers and scanners have been put on display by around 65 companies at the fair. Games, multimedia software and educational CDs were also high in demand.
