Sheikh Russell’s title hopes suffer setback

Title chaser Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra fell further behind from the league leader Dhaka Abahani after a 2-2 draw with Brothers Union in the Citycell 2nd B. League football championship at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city on Monday. Bothers Union, placed in fourth, took the lead after 10 minutes when Shakil Ahmed fired the first goal but Sheikh Russell managed to comeback into the game on the half hour mark. Going ahead, Brothers Union players tried to increase the margin to make the game safe but they failed to take right shot to the goal.At the other end Sheikh Russell, defending Brothers’ first half attacks, carried out some counter attacks and got the reward of their determined display.
Samir Omari brought off much needed goal for Sheikh Russell, leaving the both sides locked at 1-1 before the breather. After the change of ends Sheikh Russell went on to attacking play making many a move. Veteran Sheikh Russell striker Alfaz Ahmed scored on 39 minutes to raise hopes for a win for Sheikh Russell (2-1) but they, eventually, failed to cling on to their second half advantage as Zahid Hossain came to Brothers’ rescue scoring the second goal for his side in the 66th minute to force the title aspirants to share points.
Brothers earned 28 points from 16 matches, while Sheikh Russell gathered 35 points from 17 matches.
Today’s match: Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club vs Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society (Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka).
