Academic activities hampered at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology

March 19, 2009

Academic activities at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology are being hampered seriously because more than one-third of the teachers are currently abroad on study leave for higher education.  Sources in the university administration have said the absence of so many teachers from workplace for years is hindering the academic activities seriously at SUST.  A total of 130 out of 356 teachers at 23 departments of the university are now abroad either on leave with pay or without pay, the sources added. The teachers, who are abroad, include 13 of chemistry department, 12 of computer science and engineering department, 10 of chemical engineering and polymer science, 9 of statistics department, 8 of environmental engineering, 7 each of food and tea technology and geo-resources department, business administration department and English department, 6 each of forestry and environmental science department and industrial production and engineering department.
An official claimed that the situation has reached such a critical stage because of allowing the teachers especially those ones, loyal to former vice-chancellors Professor Mosleh Uddin and Professor Aminul Islam, for study leave.
Talking to New Age, a senior teacher of chemistry department said the problem has been created as the university authorities have not followed a specific regulation that how many teachers of a department can apply for study leave at a time.
‘It is necessary for the university teachers to go abroad for higher education aiming to enhance their competency. But there should have a restriction in greater interest of the institution,’ he added.
The newly appointed vice-chancellor Professor Saleh Uddin Ahmed admitted the fact, saying that they have already urged the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Education to immediately recruit 42 more teachers in different disciplines to address the existing problem.
