April 30, 2009

Industries Minister Dilip Barua on Wednesday said, the industry-friendly government is giving priority to industrialization for the sake of the national interests. Referring to first one hundred days of the government, he said, ” By this time Chittagong Chemical Complex (CCC) has been reopened, additional manpower appointed in BSTI and Trademarks act-2009 passed.” Dilip Barua said this in a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) at his office. BPGMEA President Jasimuddin and General Secretary Shamim Ahmed led the delegation, an official handout said.

Dilip Barua hoped that the steps taken by the government would be able to bring positive changes in the industrial sector.
BPGMEA leaders said country’s plastic sector created employment for about 30,000 workers involving investment of US $ 15,000 million.
Plastic industries will be able to contribute like garment sector if it gets necessary policy support and patronization from the government, they added.
BPGMEA leaders said, plastic and packaging industries were affected following wrong interpretation of law regarding banning polythene shopping bags in 2002. Supply of jute bags in the markets is not till available, they said. Considering this reality they requested the government not to issue any SRO making use of jute bags obligatory right now.
Later, the leaders of Bangladesh Supermarket Owners Association called on the industries minister and requested to issue gazette notification declaring the supermarkets as service industry.
They also demanded coordination with the market owners while conducting anti-adulteration drive by BSTI and giving permission to run markets at night using own generators.
Dilip Barua assured them of considering their dem-ands from a positive point of view.
Association President Niaz Rahim and General Secretary Zakir Hossain led the delegation.
