Govt to set up community clinics for every 6,000 people

The government would establish community clinics for every 6,000 people across the country and so far 5,000 clinics have already been launched. Besides, implementation of a Taka 36,500 crore project under Health, Nutrition, Population Sector Programme (HNPSP) is going on which would continue till 2011. Sources at Health and Family Welfare Ministry also said that a total of 10,775 community clinics are at present functioning across the country.Besides registering of newly married couples and distributing vitamin A capsules, health services during pregnancies, deliveries and after deliveries and health counseling are being provided from these clinics.
Health and Family Welfare Ministry has undertaken a programme to restructure country’s health sector in order to face the challenges of the millennium.
Health assistants are working at grassroots level for every 4,000 people in the villages, the source said. In order to ensure health services for the people, the government is implementing various programmes including rural health centers, union health and family welfare centers, upazila health complex, emergency pregnancy service, primary health care, EPI programme, contaminated diseases control project, HIV/AIDS control project, urban health service, health, education and development programmes, it said.
