HSC exams begin with record low expulsion

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent Alim and HSC in Business Management examinations under 10 education boards begin throughout the country with a record less incidents of unfair means on the first day. Education Ministry sources said, some 45 examinees were expelled on the first day of examinations across the country. Among them, 4 students were expelled under Dhaka Board, 5 students under Rajshahi Board, 1 under Comilla, 6 under Jessore, 4 under Chittagong, 9 under Barisal, 4 under Dinajpur Board, 1 under Madrasah and 11 under Technical Education Board. There were no reports of expulsion under Sylhet Education Board. Four invigilators were expelled under Dhaka Board. A total 5365 students were absent at the examination centres on the first day. Among them, 1241 students were under Dhaka Board, 649 under Rajshahi, 481 under Comilla, 682 under Jessore, 429 under Chittagong, 245 under Barisal, 239 under Sylhet, 361 under Dinajpur, 730 Dakhil and 48 Fazil students under Madrasah and 260 under Technical Education Board. English 1st paper (compulsory) of HSC, Quran Majid of Kamil and Bangla of HSC Vocational examination were held on the first day, Thursday. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid made a surprise visit to two city centres- Viqarunnesa Nun School and College and Habibullah Bahar College in the morning.

During the visit, the Minister expressed his satisfaction observing the environment of the halls and said the government is determined to ensure copying-free examination. He also warned that the government will take stern actions against any sort of ill efforts in the examinations. Examinees, however, had to write in darkness due to not having electricity while some of them wrote by candle light, Dulan, a student of Dhaka Commerce College coming to Tejgaon College for the exam, told this reporter. Nevertheless, examinees and guardians expressed satisfaction over the examinations; they called upon the government to ensure electricity supply in the centres during examination. This year a total of 6, 18,308 candidates from 7, 237 institutions have registered to appear at the HSC and its equivalent examinations as against 6, 20,020 students last year. Of the total, 3, 41, 106 are male and 2, 77, 202 female examinees.

Of them, 4, 94,733 examinees have registered for Higher Secondary Certificate examinations under eight education boards, 59,354 for Alim examinations under the Madrasah Education Board while 64,121 students for HSC (BM) examinations under the Technical Education Board.
