Scene from the Liberation War recreated
April 30, 2009
A month-long unique sculpture exhibition on Liberation War is on at a remote village, called Palash Bari, of Sadar upazila in the district. Nripen Mali, a veteran freedom fighter of Sector 6 created the sculptures using clay and cement. Industries Minister Dilip Barua inaugurated the exhibition on April 21. The exhibition has several segments. The first segment features a sculpture of Bangaban-dhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivering the historic speech of March 7. In the second segment, the mass migration of civilians to India, during the war, has been highlighted. Massacres by the Pakistani army, torture and the combat between them and the freedom fighters have also been depicted through sculptures.
Dilip Barua, in his inaugural speech on April 21, praised the initiative at the remote village highlighting the Liberation War. He also said that endeavours like this would generate interest among the post-war generations. Every Bangladeshi should be well aware of our history, in particular the sacrifices made by the nation to attain independence.
The sculptor Nripen Mali said, “I want to uphold the sprit of Liberation War and generate interest in the history among the young of this country. They should know what the nation went through for the freedom they enjoy now.”
Having no institutional training in sculpture, Mali is a self-taught artist. This mammoth task of making and arranging the sculptures is a product of his sincerity, devotion and passion.
Mali, along with a team of 20 assistants, worked hard for two months to arrange the exhibition. A management committee is looking after the exhibition with the support of the district administration.
Thousands of people — both old and young — are coming to the exhibition everyday. The event has created a sensation in the area.
