SKorean firm claims world’s thinnest LCD-TV panel

South Korea’s LG Display said Tuesday it has developed a liquid crystal display (LCD) television panel that is thinner than a pencil, describing it as the world’s slimmest. The panel, which can be 42 or 47 inches wide, uses an edge-lit light emitting diode (LED) backlight system that allows it to achieve a thickness of just 5.9mm (0.2 inches), LG Display said in a statement. The world’s second biggest LCD maker said the product weighs 6.1 kg (13.4 pounds) and 7.3 kg, about half as much as a conventional panel. Read more

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) and German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) jointly organized a seminar on “CSR- a Profitable Way of Doing Business Ethically” at DCCI on May 30. Past President of DCCI Aftabul Islam was present as Chief Guest while DCCI President Zafar Osman presided over. Speaking at the seminar Zafar Osman said that CSR strategy should be developed which would help alleviating business risk and to minimize social dispute. He laid importance on establishing a socially-compliant business environment in Bangladesh.

Wintel to set up migrants’ resource centre

A telecom solutions provider is setting up Bangladesh’s first migrants’ resource centre aiming to cater to the needs of millions of overseas job-seekers, the head of Wintel Limited said Tuesday. Faisal Alim, managing director, said the country’s largest value-added service provider for the telecom industry is now awaiting approval from the telecom regulator BTRC for a “premium” code to operate the centre. “Our aim is to open the centre early next month. We’re just waiting for the approval for a four-digit code to run it,” Mr Alim said. Read more

‘A zoo in My Luggage”, like that of Gerald Durrell’s, would have been quite unnecessary here in the land of the Masai Mara. One need only look out one’s cabin window. I am surrounded by the dusty yellowness of the Kenyan grasslands, broken from the pale blue sky by the bluish green of distant hills. The area where my log cabin is situated is monkey territory by day, occasionally overrun by tiny electric blue birds and odd, colourful lizards. Things, however, are different at night. Read more

Living in the Antelope Valley has its advantages. There is almost no rush hour traffic, no crowds to fight and a population of only half a million people. But it also has its disadvantages a lack of quality international cuisine and shopping. It is a diverse place but not enough to include a Bangladeshi restaurant. When I miss my country and crave anything Bangladeshi, I get in my car and drive 100 miles to Little Dhaka. It’s not a city or part of a city. It is a mere restaurant/grocery store in a suburb of Los Angeles called Artesia. Read more
Exporters want ban on aromatic rice to go

Exporters demand that the government withdraw a ban on aromatic rice exports. They argue the withdrawal of the restriction will help farmers get fair prices for their produce without derailing the government’s efforts to control rice prices in domestic markets at the same time. But analysts have mixed reactions to the demand. Some favour it. Minster for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Shafique Ahmed on Saturday said the government is sincerely working to meet all fundamental demands including medicare and education for women and children. It would be possible to attain the goal of ensuring development of the deprived women and children if private sector participation could be increased along with the initiatives of the government, said the law minister adding that the initiatives also need sincere cooperation by the affluent section of people, businessmen and voluntary organizations”. World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on 31 May. Every year a theme of the day is selected by the WHO. The purpose is to draw mass attention on some particulars aspects to help quit tobacco habit by the people around the globe. The theme of the WNTD this year is TOBACCO HEALTH WARNINGS. This is very timely and appropriate in the perspective of the present low literacy rate among the population in the developing countries like Bangldesh. The theme reflects how pictorial presentation can be more effective than textual materials.

The Central bank chief sees remittances topping $9.5bn

The central bank chief has expressed his hope that despite the global recession the remittance inflow in the current fiscal year would cross $9.5 billion, half a billion higher than the previous year. “This remittance will assist Bangladesh in combating the global recession and maintaining the trade balance,” governor Atiur Rahman said on Saturday. The Bangladesh Bank’s foreign reserve is now at its all time high due to the positive inflow of remittances, he said, standing at $6.5 billion dollar on Thursday. Read more
PM commits more peacekeepers, national defence policy

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that a national defence policy will be devised to safeguard the country. She also said her administration will do its best to send more troops to the UN peacekeeping mission. The prime minister made the promises at a programme marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Friday. She was sanguine that the peacekeepers from armed forces and the police would continue serve in different organizations of the United Nations and in diplomatic activities. Read more
