Dr Wazed’s first janaza held

The first namaz-e-janaza of eminent scientist and husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Dr MA Wazed Miah was held at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque in the capital today at about 10:00am. President Zillur Rahman, Speaker Abdul Hamid, Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, most cabinet members, parliament members, leaders of different political parties, eminent personalities and hundreds of people from all walks of life took part in the janaza, led by Khatib of the national mosque Maulana Salahuddin, UNB adds.
The janaza prayers began at 10:45am, about 45 minute behind the schedule, as the body could not reach in time from the mortuary of Square Hospital.
Later, the body was kept for some time in front of the mosque enabling people to pay their last respects to the late scientist.
The body will be flown to Wazed’s ancestral home at Fatepur of Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district.
He will be laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard beside his parents after a second janaza after Zohr prayers today.
Dr M Wazed Miah died at the age of 67 at the city’s Square Hospital yesterday afternoon after prolonged illness.
He was suffering from kidney and cardiac problems. Recently, he had undergone angioplasty at Singapore National Heart Centre.
A condolence book was opened at PM’s official residence Jamuna at 11:00am today for three days for diplomats and representatives of donor agencies to register their condolences on the death of Dr Wazed.
The Qulkhawani of Wazed Miah will be held in Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Jamuna on Thursday after Magrib prayers.
