Panel formed to bring parity to exams grading

May 23, 2009

The government has formed a committee to bring equality between grading and division systems, its chief said Wednesday. “We don’t want to keep [any group of students unhappy],” Maeen Uddin Khandaker, joint secretary of the education ministry who heads the committee, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday. The committee will make suggestions within three working days and meet on Sunday, he said. He said the panel was sanguine about coming up with the right set of recommendations to keep all sides happy. Steps would be taken upon the proposals made by all sitting on the committee, Khandaker said.

Representatives of the University Grants Commission, Public Service Commission, University of Dhaka and various institutions are on the committee.

The education ministry decided to bring parity between grading system and class or division system in the SSC and HSC exams in April.

According to the decision, students who have had GPA 4, marks from 70 to 79, to GPA 5, marks from 80 to 100, will fall under first division.

Those with GPA-3, marks from 50-59, to GPA 3.5, marks from 60-69, will be classified under second division.

GPA 1, marks from 33-39, to GPA 2, marks from 40-49, will fall under third division.

A similar system was endorsed for universities.

The students who passed SSC and HSC from 2001 to 2003 protested the government move.

GPA was introduced to SSC exams in 2001 and to HSC tests in 2003.
