Success in SSC will not ensure berth in HSC
May 28, 2009
A serious crisis is likely to creep up over the admission of the students, who have passed the SSC examination under eight education boards this year, to higher secondary educational institutions due to shortage of seats in colleges. According to the results published on Tuesday, a total of 5, 37, 878 students passed the SSC examination with at least GPA 1 while the number of the seats in the colleges is 4, 64, 000. Thus the number of successful students this year exceeds the seats by 73, 878.
According to the Education Ministry and BANBAIS, there are 2794 colleges across the country with more than four and a half lac seats. Of the total, there are 92, 386 seats in 240 government colleges and 3, 70, 914 seats in 2798 non-government colleges. Of the total seats, 2, 70, 000 are for the students of humanities group, 1, 08, 000 for science group and 85, 000 for business studies group.
This year, 45, 934 students obtained GPA 5 under eight education boards. A total 1, 44,754 students obtained GPA between 4 and 4.88 while 1, 12,291 students between GPA 3.5 and 3.9 while 1, 13, 152 between GPA 3 and 3.5, while 1, 12, 809 between GPA 2 and 2.9 and 9, 048 between GPA 1 and 1.9.
On the other hand, there is another problem relating to admission to the colleges in the cities specially Dhaka. Most of the brilliant students who fared well in the examination are interested in getting themselves admitted to the reputed colleges in the capital and other cities. The number of seats there is too small to accommodate them all. So, thousands of meritorious students including GPA-5 holders are sure to be deprived of the opportunity of admission to the colleges of their choice.
According to sources, there are 39, 519 seats in 135 colleges of Dhaka city while well known 10 colleges hold only 9 thousand seats. These 10 colleges will face a serious difficulty to accommodate the bright students among the 62, 307 GPA 5 holders.
These 10 colleges where there will be a heavy rush of brilliant students from all over the country for admission are Notre dam College, Viqarunnisanun School and College, Ideal School and College, Dhaka College, Holy Cross College, Dhaka Commerce College, Government Science College, Badrunnesa College, Dhaka City College and RAJUK Uttara Model College.
For this situation, students and their guardians face an uncertain future in respect of admission to premier institutions of higher secondary education.
