June 16, 2009
Nadampur High School, one of the nine schools in the Bibiyana area supported by Chevron Bangladesh, hosted a simple ceremony on its premises recently to celebrate the academic excellence of the students in the SSC examinations for the year 2009.
Chevron’s Director of External Affairs Naser Ahmed was present at the function as the chief guest, said a press release.
The school featured in the seventh position of the top 10 best performing schools of the Sylhet Division Education Board for the year and in the second position among schools in Habiganj district.
A total of 42 candidates sat for the examinations – all of whom passed.
Of the 16 high schools in Nabiganj, Nadampur High School is the first to achieve the milestone of 100 per cent pass rate.
The pass percentage of Chevron-supported schools has increased from 45 per cent in 2007 to 70 per cent in 2009.
Chevron Bangladesh provides funding for 12 additional teachers and awards scholarships to around 300 students every year to local schools in Bibiyana.
Last year, a total of 551 eligible students were given stipends of Tk 6,000 in Dhaka and all of Chevron’s field locations in Bibiyana, Moulavi Bazar and Jalalabad.
Chevron also established 13 informal schools in Bibiyana, attended by 390 previously out-of-school children, the release added.
