DU Correspondent — Dhaka University (DU) Monday announced its Tk 1.84 billion budget for the fiscal 2009-10 showing a deficit of Tk 100 million with an allocation of only 11 per cent of the total amount for education and research sector.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 1.54 billion of the total budget and Tk 200 million will come from the university’s own income.
DU Treasurer Mizanur Rahman presented the budget in detail at the university’s annual senate session with Vice-Chancellor and senate Chairman AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair in the afternoon.
The lion’s share (78.52 per cent) of the total amount will be spent for salary, allowances and pension of teachers, officials and employees of the university. This sector has been allotted over Tk 1.44 billion while Tk 200 million for education and research and Tk 210 million for other incidental sectors.
The amount in this sector has been increased to Tk 56.2 million this year from the last year’s allocation of Tk 16 million.
Senate Chairman AAMS Arefin Siddique in his welcome address called upon all to come forward to strengthen the prestigious status of the university in the greater interest of the nation irrespective of party and personal interests.
Meanwhile, the BNP-backed teacher representatives, popularly known as white panel, to the 104-member senate went for a symbolic walkout protesting what they alleged as the VC’s silence about the irregularities in the election of registered graduate representatives to the senate.
