Govt didn’t allow opposition to play role in JS: BNPPP

June 30, 2009

BNP Parliamentary Party (BNPPP) today alleged that the government did not allow opposition lawmakers to perform their role in Parliament and again urged the speaker and ruling party to ensure ‘appropriate atmosphere’ for their joining the House.

“Role of the opposition parties in Parliament is inevitable. Parliament is meaningless without the opposition. The functions of the opposition are to hold the government accountable on behalf of the people for its actions. We want to perform the role,” reads a written statement of BNPPP.

Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque read out the statement at a press briefing at the parliament’s media centre.

“We want to remind that the role of ruling party to approve of the opposition party is the spirit of the parliamentary democracy. They [ruling party] should not forget that their existence and tenure will come to an end if there is no opposition party in Parliament,” BNPPP asserted.

The BNPPP strongly criticised the ruling party lawmakers’ recent remarks on late president Ziaur Rahman and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The BNP-led opposition lawmakers remain absence in the budget session of the House.
