HC asks govt to demarcate Dhaka rivers by October
June 25, 2009
The High Court today directed the government to demarcate the four rivers that surround the capital after conducting cadastral surveys (CSs) within the four months from July 1.
The forests and environment secretary has been directed to announce the rivers — Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Turag and Balu — as ecologically critical areas for this period.
The court also directed the authorities concerned to set up pillars on the boundaries of the rivers within the next six months after the demarcation of the rivers.
The court directed them to evict all illegal structures and encroachment from the rivers within the next six months after setting up of the pillars.
The HC also said tree plantation can be made on the banks of the rivers within a year after removing the illegal structures.
The court directed the director general of land, survey department and other authorities concerned to assist the authorities in completing the tasks.
The court also directed the finance ministry to allocate sufficient fund to do the jobs.
The judges observed that the core rivers — Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitalakhya — have become biologically dead and measures should be taken to save one crore and 20 lakh people of Dhaka.
