Parliament passes budget

The parliament on Tuesday passed the Tk 1,13,819 crore budget for 2009-10 fiscal year in the absence of main opposition BNP.

After discussing the cut motions on allocation demands by different ministries, it was passed in voice vote by MPs.

The parliament allowed the government to allocate Tk 189,995 crore from the supplementary fund to finance all activities from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Finance minister AMA Muhith proposed the maiden budget of the Awami-League-led Grand Alliance government on June 11.

The budget session that started on June 4 saw the opposition absent throughout.

Finance minister AMA Muhith on Monday slashed the proposed import duty on newsprint, motorcycle, low-price cellphone sets, cars under 1500cc and microbus under 2000cc in the revised budget.

He proposed higher duty on big and luxury cars.

Muhith said in his concluding budget speech in the parliament that the proposals were reviewed taking into account the situation of middle-class people.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina in her speech in the House had asked him to slash the duties.
