RMG worker killed in Ansars firing

A ready-made garment (RMG) worker was killed this morning as Ansars opened fire to disperse the demonstrating workers at Jamgorah in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital.

 

The deceased was identified as Alamin, 20.

 

The fellow workers who brought Alamin to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) told reporters that he was injured after the Ansars opened fire on their demonstration.

 

Locals said some workers of SQ Sweater Factory staged demonstrations in front of their factory at about 11:00am demanding arrears.

 

At one stage, the Ansars opened fire to bring the situation under control, leaving two workers seriously wounded.

 

Both the injured were rushed to the DMCH where doctors declared Alamin dead.

 

The injured was identified as Rony, 20.

 

UNB adds: at least 30 garment workers were injured in the clash with police and Ansars in Ashulia.

 

Locals said 1,800 workers of S Suhi Industrial Park has been demonstrating to realise their demands, including outstanding salary and over time bill, for the last few days.

 

The workers this morning got into altercation with the factory authorities and manhandled some of its officials.

 

The clash ensued when police and Ansars rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

 

Sources said 15 to 20 fires were shot towards the workers by the law enforcers during the clash that left three workers injured. Police also lobbed tear gas shells during the clash.

 

Police however said they did not fire any bullet. But Ansars admitted that they had to open fire on the workers to bring the situation under control.

 

At one stage, the angry workers set ablaze the depot of the garment factory.

 

The clash was on during filing of this report this afternoon.
