When West Indies put up 274 runs on the board not many in Bangladesh were convinced that the Tigers would be able to chase down the target. It was not just that it was something Bangladesh had not successfully chased before (their highest run-chase was 250 against Australia in Cardiff in 2005), but also the past records of the batters that often succumbed to self-destructed pressure, notwithstanding the strength of the opponents, that led to that belief.

True it was not a full strength West Indies team. Still, it was a tough ask from a team whose performance can be best described like the on and off power supply in the country.

Saudi won’t recognise Israel till it gives up Arab land

Regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia will not recognise Israel until it withdraws from occupied Arab land and makes committed steps toward a lasting two-state solution, a senior official said yesterday.

Foreign ministry spokesman Osama Nugali also called Israeli policy “schizophrenic” and said it was jeopardising attempts to revive Middle East peace talks aimed at creating an independent Palestinian state.

Ahom Tamoshay: A peek into the dark side

Mahakal Natya Sampraday staged its latest production “Ahom Tamoshay” on the sixth day (July 28) of its ongoing theatre festival. The festival marks Mahakal’s 26th anniversary. The play was staged at the National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Written by Anon Zaman, the play narrates the dark side of human psyche.

The negative human attributes, such as self-interest, greed, hypocrisy and cruelty, have been brought into light in the play. Each character refers to the darker side of the society.

Discharge duties without fear and favour

Int’l evidence sought for war trial

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed today sought more evidences from the international community against individuals accused of genocide during the Liberation War in 1971 to proceed the war crimes trial with an international standard.

He was speaking at the opening session of the “Second International Conference on Genocide, Truth and Justice” at Cirdap auditorium organised by the Liberation War Museum.

PM orders eviction of illegal structures on water bodies

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today directed the authorities concerned to evict all illegal establishments on water bodies and major rivers for protection of the fisheries.

The prime minister made the directive at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘National Fisheries Week 2009′ at Osmany Smrity Auditorium this morning, ATN Bangla reports.

SC stays Khaleda Niko case

The Supreme Court today upheld the High Court order that earlier stayed the proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Niko corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order dismissing the leave-to-appeal filed by the ACC against the HC order.

ACC to be asked to sue Matin for graft

A parliamentary body today told the shipping ministry to ask the Anti-Corruption Commission to sue former shipping adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin and eight others on charge of irregularities in awarding a container handling deal at Chittagong Port.

Former shipping secretary Sheikh Motahar Hossain, now a privatisation commission member, Chairman of the Chittagong Port Reazuddin Ahmed and its Director (Traffic) Ehsanul Kabir would be among the eight others to be accused in the case.

Govt officials may have to pay income tax from current fiscal

Doulot Akter Mala — Government officials having taxable earnings might have to pay their own income tax from the current fiscal as the government is contemplating not refunding the income tax paid by public servants.

Public service holders having annual income exceeding the tax-free ceiling of Tk 165,000 might have to pay the tax themselves in 2009-10 fiscal, a top tax official told the FE Wednesday.
