5th South Asian Shooting begins tomorrow

July 2, 2009

The 5th South Asian Shooting Championship, organised by Bangladesh Shooting Federation, begins for the first time at BKSP shooting range tomorrow (Friday) with the participation of five south Asian countries, reports UNB.

Army Chief Gen Mohammad Abdul Mubin will formally inaugurate the seven-day meet as the chief guest while State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar will be the chief guest on the concluding day.

A total of 120 shooters from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and host Bangladesh will compete in the 12 events of the championship.

Bangladesh secured two gold medals in the last championship in Pakistan, but this time “our only target is to play well in the meet,” Shooting Federation general secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed said at a press conference at the National Sports Council (NSC) conference room in the city Wednesday afternoon.

Explaining, he said most of the Bangladeshi shooters are new and inexperienced.

Ishtiaq, however, expressed the hope that the shooters would able to make proper use of their experience from the championship in the upcoming South Asian (SA) Games to be held in Dhaka January next.

He said they would sorely miss the services of country’s ace shooter Asif Hossain Khan, who has been undergoing higher training in Germany.

Shooting Federation will bear the entire tournament budget of Tk 3.9 million (Tk 39 lakh) to run the championship.

Teams from India, Pakistan and Bhutan will arrive in Dhaka today (Thursday), while the Sri Lankan team will land at the Zia International Airport at small hours Friday.

Shooting Federation vice president AQM Aksir Ahmed and treasurer cum media committee chairman Kashem Humayun were present at the press conference.
