Chevron distributes scholarship to Moulavibazar students

Chevron Bangladesh as part of its scholarship distribution programme among financially disadvantaged but meritorious students has awarded scholarships to 160 students of four high schools in Moulavibazar.Chevron Bangladesh’s Asset Development Manager Dale Brown handed over the scholarships to 40 students of Bhairabganj Bazar Dwipakshik High School at a simple ceremony recently, said a press release.

Scholarships of Tk 6,000 will also be awarded to 40 candidates each in Ahmed Iqbal Memorial High School, Kamalganj Bohumukhi High School and Kakiabazar High School.

In addition, 10 students from the indigenous ‘Khasia’ community have also been selected for these stipends.

The company has been running the scholarship programme for several years to improve the overall educational scenario of schools near its three gas fields.

As of 2008, the number of scholarship recipients stood at 551, each being selected on the basis of their financial need and academic performance.

Among others, Bhairabganj Bazar Dwipakshik High School Headmaster Sree Shyamal Kanti Biswas, Vice President of the school Managing Committee Shahidur Rahman, Chairman of Kalapur Union Parishad Abdul Hye, Chevron Moulavibazar Gas Plant Superintendent Wanwit Wongpradu, Community Relations Manager Obaidullah Al Ejaz and Field Community Engagement Manager Zulfikar Ahmed Chowdhury were present at the scholarship distribution ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Brown said, “One of our most important investments in Bangladesh was the education of its youth so that they could help address the needs of the country as they became the leaders of tomorrow,” the release added.
