DU Day observed with vow to reinforce democracy

DU Correspondent — Teachers and students Wednesday celebrated the ‘Dhaka University (DU) Day’ with a pledge to strengthen democracy for consolidating the country’s trend of development alongside retaining its unity and solidarity.
The theme of celebration of the ‘DU Day’ this year was ‘higher education in democratisation.’
A series of programmes including a colourful rally, discussion, debate, blood donation, friendly football match and a cultural soiree was held with much fanfare and festivity for the eighth time in 88 years of the university.
DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the daylong programme with the rally in the morning where hundreds of teachers and students from the university’s residential halls participated.
Students rejoiced over the day by dancing and singing everywhere on the campus ignoring the intermittent rainfall since noon. The DU VC at the discussion on the ‘DU Day’ at TSC auditorium at noon made a clarion call to teachers and students to play their highest role in promoting the democratic process of the country for structuring an atmosphere of happiness, peace and prosperity of the nation.
Teachers and students expressed their vow at the discussion continue the country’s democratic progress anyhow in response to the VC’ call.
DU Pro-VC Harun-or-Rashid, Treasurer Mizanur Rahman, former VC AK Azad Chowdhury and Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury, among others, spoke on the occasion.
