Formalin test centre at Karwan Bazar opens today
July 14, 2009
A formalin test centre will be inaugurated today (Tuesday) at Karwan Bazar in the city to ensure selling of formalin-free fishes, reports BSS.
Five government officials have undertaken this project as part of their professional skill development, said an official release.
Under the project, one will be able to test whether there is formalin in a fish. It will help remove confusion both from the minds of fish buyers and sellers.
The officials, however, assured that this initiative would not increase fish price in the market. Adequate supply of formalin-free fish in Karwan Bazar will be ensured, the project source said.
Formalin is poisonous and harmful to health. Cancer may spread in stomach and lung due to formalin. Smelling formalin may cause headache and breathing problem.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas will inaugurate the centre at 10 am. Local parliament member Asaduzzaman Khan Shyamal, high officials, representatives of UNDP and European Union will be present.
A motivation meeting will be held at Karwan Bazar before inaugurating the formalin test center along with local people and consumers.
It will discuss harmful aspects of formalin on human body. Karwan Bazar fish traders association will announce selling of formalin free fishes.
The project will be extended to other big markets and shopping malls if it achieves success in Karwan Bazar.
