July 5, 2009
FE Report — Finance Minister AMA Muhith Saturday said lack of efficiency among the administrative officials and energy crisis are the two major impediments that are holding back the country’s much-needed development.”It will take time to reform the administration and the government is seriously considering the matter. And the non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) should come forward to mitigate the existing energy crisis,” he added.
He was speaking at the con cluding ceremony of the ‘First NRB Manpower Development and Opportunities Conference 2009′ at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.
Scholars Bangladesh and Human Capital Development Limited jointly organised the three-day conference.
Speaking as chief guest, Mr Muhith said the country has to create a congenial environment so that the NRBs can invest in the country’s much-needed energy sector.
He said the tender document for the Bibiana is almost final.
“But we need at least five power units like Bibiana. We need substantial investments in the energy sector.”
He assured the NRBs of all sorts of government cooperation to this effect.
The minister said: “Remittance to the country is flowing in. But we do not see proper investment.”
“We will provide the NRB’s with a bank so that they can easily invest in the stock market and form syndicated loan for the infrastructure development.”
Mr Muhith urged the central bank to look into the matter.
He also said that the airport services at Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet will be developed so that the NRBs do not face any sort of harassment when they return.
He disclosed the government’s plans to discontinue export processing zone in the country. “We will give priority on setting up special economic zone where the NRBs will be encouraged to invest.”
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, Pubali Bank Limited Managing Director Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, Premier Bank Managing Director Shah Alam Sarwar, Scholars Bangladesh Founder and President M E Chowdhury Shamim and Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agency President Golam Mostafa also spoke on the occasion.
