Restructure BTV to upgrade programme status: JS body

A parliamentary body on Tuesday expressed disappointment over the news standard of the Bangladesh Television (BTV) and asked the ministry concerned to restructure the state-run media to upgrade its news and other programmes.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Cultural Affairs Ministry also formed a two-member sub-committee headed by lawmaker Shahriar Alam to investigate alleged irregularities in recruitment procedure of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) since 1990.

“There is no improvement in the BTV news, even the news status does not improved a bit after the new government came into power,” Obaidul Quader, chairman of the standing committee told reporters after the meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

“News pattern of BTV remains the same as it was during the successive government, there is no change there. BTV news is playing role like the previous government,” a disappointed Obaidul, also a ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker said.

Total news item of BTV is nothing but government advertisement, this perception has to be changed,” Quader, also AL Presidium Member said.

News is like a commodity, it has to be sold as the private television channels do,” he added.

The committee strongly recommended the information ministry to take necessary steps including restructuring it to modernise BTV’s programme including its news status,” Quader added.

It is the viallage people who only see news on BTV that has terrestrial facility,” Quader observed.

He however said the programmes of the state-run sole terrestrial television channel has improved slightly.

On formation of a sub-committee, the standing committee chief said there are allegations of irregularities in recruitment process of the BSS during the successive government.

“We have formed a two-member sub-committee to investigate the matter and to make recommendations to stop the practice,” he said.

On alleged corruption, irregularities and mismanagement in Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC), Obaidul Quader said, the five-member parliamentary sub-committee will submit its probe report and recommendations to the main committee by November 30.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary body on information ministry on August 12 formed a five-member sub-committee headed by AL lawmaker Reza Ali to investigate the alleged widespread irregularities, corruption and mismanagement in (BFDC).

The four other members of the committee are Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque and AL lawmakers Sarah Begum Kabari, Shahin Monowara Haq and Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh.
