Bangabandhu killers walk to gallows by Jan 31

January 27, 2010

Five convicted killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be executed any day before January 31, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said on Wednesday.

Five convicts, now behind the bars, are Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed.

After a meeting at the law ministry, Shafique told reporters that the government would execute them as per the jail code.

According to law, persons sentenced to death must be executed between 21 and 28 days from the day of issuance of death warrants.

The minister however said two convicts who did not seek mercy to the president could still appeal for mercy. They are Syed Farooq Rahman and Mohiuddin Ahmed.

The Appellate Division had earlier dismissed the petitions filed by the five condemned convicts seeking to review the verdict against them.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Tafazzul Islam passed the order, clearing the way for the execution.

The apex court sat at 9:25am and pronounced the order at 9:27 in the morning.

The court said the points raised in the review petitions were earlier discussed and settled in the November 19 judgment.

Chief State Counsel for the case Anisul Huq said the jail authorities could now execute the convicts any time before January 31.

The last date for execution of the killers of Bangabandhu is January 31, Anisul Huq said.

The Supreme Court on November 19 last year confirmed capital punishment to 12 former army officers including the five.

Of the 12 condemned convicts of the case, one has died while six others are on the run.
