Gazipur workers go on rampage after road crash

Angry garment workers burned to ashes at least 15 buses and trucks and ransacked around 25 other vehicles at Board Bazar in Tongi following the death of one of their fellows in a road accident Monday morning.

Soon after the accident at about 8:00am, the agitating workers put up barricade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for about three hours, causing serious traffic jam in the area.

Locals said a Konabari-bound bus ploughed through people, who were waiting for bus on the roadside, killing one on the spot and injuring 10 others.

The dead was identified as Sujan Miah, 22, a worker of Prime Sweater, hailed from Sreebordi upazila of Sherpur, reports a correspondent from Gazipur.

The injured were admitted to a local clinic.

Transport communications on the highway were restored at about 11:00am.
