Hasina seeks quick funds for LDCs to face climate challenges

January 18, 2010

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday urged the leaders of the developed countries to provide funds to the least developed countries (LDCs) immediately to address the climate change issue.

She also said her government will extend its full cooperation to the LDCs for good governance and poverty reduction.

The premier was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day High-Level Asia-Pacific Policy Dialogue on the Brussels Programme of Action for the least developed countries at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Government of Bangladesh jointly convened the programme.

The main objective of this session is to bring together policy makers from the governments of LDCs with eminent persons and independent experts to evaluate the progress made, obstacles encountered and identify the remaining challenges in the implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action for the LDCs and come up with forward-looking medium- to long-term recommendations that would be useful for the regional review.

The Brussels Programme of Action for the least developed countries for the decade 2001-2010, which was endorsed by the General Assembly in its resolution 55/279 represents a time bound comprehensive poverty reduction strategy with 30 internationally agreed development goals.

Senior government policymakers and other stakeholders from LDCs, repetitive from the UN, relevant regional organisations, development partners, broad spectrum of the civil society from Asia-Pacific region and private sector are participating in the programme.
