January 25, 2010
The High Court on Monday issued a rule upon the government and the Chief Election Commissioner to explain within two weeks why they should not be directed to demarcate the area and determine the number of wards of Dhaka City Corporation on the basis of latest population census.
The HC bench of Justice Momtaz Uddin Ahmed and Justice Naima Haider issued the rule upon a writ petition filed by Shamim Mollah, a voter of ward No 17 of the DCC.
The petitioner prayed to the court to direct the government and the CEC and the DCC mayor to implement the provision of the gazette notification issued on October 15, 2009.
As per the notification, the area and the number of wards of every city corporation of the country will be determined according to the latest population census.
He said the number of population and area of the ward of DCC are different and the wards should be demarcated on the basis of population so that the development budget of the wards can be allocated equally.
The LGRD secretary, the CEC, the DCC mayor and deputy commissioner of Dhaka have been asked to reply to the rule.
