Jamuna TV petition sent to CJ
January 21, 2010
The High Court on Thursday sent to the chief justice a writ petition challenging the government action stopping the broadcasting of private television channel Jamuna Television.
The HC bench of Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mamnoon Rahman sent the petition to Chief Justice Md Tafazzul Islam for an appropriate order following a submission of Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
The AG told the court that he was busy in other urgent cases and he had no sufficient time for appearing before the court in this case.
The attorney general also prayed to the court to drop the matter from the cause list of this bench since the bench has no power to regularly hear the writ petition.
The CJ earlier reconstituted this bench for hearing the writ petition for only three days that expired on Thursday.
Jamuna TV Ltd Chairman Nurul Islam Babul earlier filed the writ petition.
The High Court on December 7 last year in a rule asked the government and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to explain within one week why their actions stopping the broadcasting of Jamuna TV, and cancelling allocation of its frequency should not be declared illegal.
