Sahara vows to nab ‘godfathers’ of smuggling
January 20, 2010
Home minister Sahara Khatun has said the government is going after the big guns behind smuggling rings.
“We’ve a list of the godfathers of smugglers. We will launch a drive to bring them to book … We’ll not spare anybody,” she said, briefing the press on Wednesday after the 46th meeting of the national smuggling prevention committee at the home ministry.
Sahara said successive governments had yet to arrest any of the ‘godfathers’ though a members of the smuggling rings have been caught.
But, the minister said, the incidence of smuggling arms and drugs had declined as her government had reopened a number of major cases.
“Smugglers have gone into hiding after the government launched a reinvestigation into the Chittagong arms haul, August 21 grenade attack and SAMS Kibria murder cases.”
State minister for home Shamsul Haq Tuku, who was present at the briefing, said building a list of the main operatives of smuggling syndicates was ongoing.
