Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Regional Council Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma popularly known as Santu Larma on Wednesday narrowly escaped gun attacks in Mohalchhari upazila of Khagrachhari.
Santu Larma, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), remained unhurt while his motorcade came under attacks at three spots–Detchhari, Menuchhari and Maishchhari–on his way to the district circuit house, our Khagrachhari correspondent reports.
The criminals shot several fires on his motorcade and managed to flee the scenes immediately, our correspondent adds.
The private car, carrying him, was damaged in the attack.
In another incident, Nikhil Kumar, chairman of Rangamati District Council, also came under attack in Rangamati on his way to Khagrachhari circuit house in the morning.
He also escaped the attack unhurt.
Larma was coming from Rangamati to attend a meeting of the CHT Land Commission at the circuit house.
After reaching at the circuit house around 11:05am, he told journalists that if the government provided him proper security, the miscreants could not be able to carry out the attacks.
While asked, Khagrachhari Superintended of Police Amir Jafar told The Daily Star that Santu Larma was given proper protection.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdullah also claimed that proper protection was provided to Santu Larma.
Moreover, additional police have been deployed at different points ahead of the Land Commission meeting, he added.
PCJSS activities claimed that the members of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) might be involved with the attacks.
When contacted, UPDF district unit press secretary Niron Chakma however denied the allegation saying that the attacks might have been taken place due to the internal dispute of the PCJSS.
