Sec 144 withdrawn as tension eases in Khagrachhari

The Khagrachhari administration on Sunday withdrew the section 144 imposed on February 23 in the town after violence erupted between indigenous people and Bangalee settlers.

M Abdullah, deputy commissioner of Khagrachhari, told The Daily Star that he had withdrawn the section 144 around 12noon as a calm and quiet situation has been prevailing in the hilly district town, our Khagrachhari correspondent reports.

Iqbal sent to jail on surrender

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former Awami League lawmaker HBM Iqbal to jail after he surrendered to the court to seek bail in a corruption case.

Iqbal was earlier sentenced to 13 years in jail in the case.

Judge AFM Aminul Islam of the Special Judge Court-1 passed the order.

A magnificent century from Tamim Iqbal helped Bangladesh to reach 228 all out in 45.4 overs against England in the first ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.

Police are on the hunt for the son of BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Abdul Hamid Paban, who they say planned the recent blasts in front of the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office for his own ends.

An associate of Paban’s, Golam Sabbir Shovon, who was detained and questioned Saturday, told police of the ‘plot’, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque told a press conference.

Anger continued to brew in the remote Baghaihat area over Saturday’s killing of indigenous people and arson attacks on their houses, with the indigenous people holding the army responsible for the incidents.

The dislodged indigenous people also blamed Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Humayun Kabir for the incidents and attacked him yesterday when he was returning from the spot along with the state minister for CHT affairs.

Rapid Action Battalion members arrested a man from Khulshi residential area in Chittagong city early Monday on charge of threatening Awami League lawmaker Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh over cell phone.
