5th amendment verdict to put secular education in action: Shafique
February 6, 2010
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Saturday said the Supreme Court’s verdict in the fifth amendment case has cleared the way for reintroducing the non-communal and indiscriminatory education system in the spirit of Liberation War.
The Supreme Court judgment nullifying the fifth amendment of the constitution has not hurt the religion, but established it, he said.
Shafique was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of seventh conference of Bangladesh College-University Teachers Association at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium on the Dhaka University campus.
Following the judgment, the people of all communities can perform their respective virtues, since the judgment has paved the way for restoring the constitution of 1972, the minister said.
He also said the government has given priority to the education for building a developed country with the spirit of the country’s Liberation War.
The law minister said a vested quarter has been trying to mislead the people by misinterpreting the Supreme Court judgment in the fifth amendment case.
He urged the teachers to teach right lessons to their students about the history of the Liberation War and its spirit and also assured them that the government would accept their recommendations for enhancement of their salaries and nationalising the education system.
