Criminal killed in gunfight with security forces in Rangamati

An indigenous criminal was shot dead during a heavy gunfight with security forces at Gangaram Mukh village in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district Saturday morning.
Police confirmed the death of criminal Bijoy Laxmi Chakma and said he was killed by bullet shot by his fellows, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.
An army sergeant, Rezaul, of Baghaihat zone was also critically injured as the criminals hacked him with a sharp weapon during the fight.
The gunfight that started at about 9:30am was continued till filing of this report in the afternoon although local administration has imposed section 144 in the upazila.
Over 50 houses have so far been torched at the village since Friday night.
The battle has already spread to Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district.
Our Khagrachhari correspondent, quoting police, said UNO Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Humayun Kabir and officer-in charge of local police station Noimuddin and six journalists from Khagrachhari went to the spot but were confined by the criminals.
A team of army rescued the UNO and the OC from a room at about 1:30pm.
Besides, about 150 to 200 indigenous people barred Khagrachhari Regional Commander Brigadier General Salehin from coming to Khagrachhari from Sazek in Rangamati putting barricade on the road.
On Friday night, the criminals attacked the village and injured 20 people and torched 39 houses.
Quoting witnesses, police said a group of unidentified assailants, numbering 80/90 equipped with weapons and sticks, attacked the village at about 9:00pm on Friday.
Earlier on April 20, 2008 criminals burnt to ashes at least 132 houses of both Bengali and Indigenous people at same Gangarum Mukh in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati hill district.
