HC wants new warrant of precedence within 60 days

February 4, 2010

The High Court on Thursday declared the Warrant of Precedence, 1986 illegal and asked the government to frame a new one within 60 days.

The court directed the government to give district judges, additional district judges and chief metropolitan magistrates precedence over the chiefs of three forces –army, navy and air force—and the secretaries.

The warrant of precedence lays down the relative precedence in terms of ranks of important functionaries belonging to the executive, legislative and judicial organs of the state, including members of the foreign diplomatic corps, says Banglapedia.

As per the existing warrant of precedence, district and sessions judges are equivalent to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the army.

The chiefs of staff of the army, navy and air force are now equivalent to the cabinet secretary and the principal secretary.

The HC came up with the ruling following a writ petition filed by Ataur Rahman, a district and session judge, challenging the existing warrant of precedence.
