A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former Awami League lawmaker HBM Iqbal to jail after he surrendered to the court to seek bail in a corruption case.

Iqbal was earlier sentenced to 13 years in jail in the case.

Judge AFM Aminul Islam of the Special Judge Court-1 passed the order.

A special court on March 11, 2008 sentenced Iqbal to 13 years in jail with 10 years rigorous imprisonment on two counts of crimes.

The court also fined him Tk 50 lakh and ordered another year in jail on failure to pay the fine.

Judge Firoz Alam in the judgment had directed the government to confiscate wealth worth Tk 14.56 crore belonging to Iqbal and his family.

The AL leader was convicted for concealing information on his wealth worth over Tk 10 crore in the wealth statement and earning wealth worth over Tk 2 crore from unknown sources.

ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Ibrahim filed the case against Iqbal, his wife, two sons and a daughter with Gulshan police on June 25 in 2007.
