February 22, 2010
Several thousand indigenous people brought out a procession protesting Saturday’s killing of their community people and arson attacks on their houses in the remote Baghaihat area of Rangamati and demanding parliamentary inquiry into the incidents.
Meanwhile, Parbatya Bhikkhu Sangha Bangladesh submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner of Rangamati in this regard, reports our Rangamati correspondent.
Around 7,000 indigenous people from across the district, led by Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), also brought out the procession at about 11:30am that arrived in front of the DC office at about 12:00pm after parading the main thoroughfares of the town.
After the procession, the agitating ethnic people held a rally in front of the DC’s office and also handed over a memorandum to the DC addressing the prime minister.
In the memorandum, they demanded withdrawal of army camps from the three hilly districts and stopping operation Uttoron, complete implementation of the CHT peace treaty and removal of Bangalee settlers from the hill tracts.
They also demanded immediate release of the six indigenous people, who were picked up by police during the Saturday’s incident.
