Rajuk resumes demolition of Jamuna park floors

February 18, 2010

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipokkho (Rajuk) Thursday morning resumed its demolition drive to knock down illegally built top four floors of Jamuna Future Park Shopping Complex in the city following dismissal of an appeal petition filed by the building owner with the Supreme Court.

The Rajuk decided to demolish only the partition wall of the unauthorised four floors manually with 45 labourers.

They spared pillars and roofs of the top four floors for the time being, Rajuk sources said.

The demolition team comprised of authorised officer to Rajuk Shafiqul Islam and three executive engineers, led by Executive Magistrate Rokon Ud-Doula, launched the drive at about 10:00am on the 10th floor of the 10-storey building of Jamuna group at Joar Sahara (Bashundhara).

“We will demolish roofs and pillars later with a joint team of experts,” Rokon Ud-Doula said.

On February 11, a six-member bench of the Appellate Division upheld a High Court order dismissing a petition filed by Jamuna Builders Ltd, which paved the way for Rajuk to knock down the illegal floors of the shopping complex.

Earlier, on January 13 Rajuk served a notice upon Jamuna Builders asking them to knock down the unauthorised floors within seven days.

In response Jamuna Builders filed a writ petition with the HC on January 17 challenging the legality of the notice but the HC summarily rejected the petition on February 3.

The next day, Rajuk moved to knock down the floors but the procedure halted as Jamuna Builders Ltd filed a petition with the SC against the HC order.
