Rajuk stops 1st day demolition at Jamuna Park

February 4, 2010

The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) Thursday afternoon stopped its first day demolition work at the upper four unauthorised floors of the Jamuna Future Park Shopping Complex in the city, few hours after it began the drive.

“We have started the demolition drive today without having adequate preparation as we got a order to start the drive last night,” Rajuk Director Development Control Abdul Mannan Sheikh who was present on the spot during the demolition drive said.

Rajuk, the city developer, launched the drive one day after the High Court summarily rejected a writ petition challenging a Rajuk notice that asked Jamuna Future Park Shopping Complex authorities to demolish the unauthorised top four floors of the 10-storey building.

A joint demolition team comprising police and Rajuk officials led by executive magistrate Rokon-Ud-Doula started the demolition around 10:30am.

The team entered the shopping complex premises around 9:45am.

Sources said an application was filed in the day with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging Wednesday’s HC order that summarily rejected the writ petition.

Rokon said the drive would continue unless there was a court order.

Earlier, a team of plain cloth police named ‘Jameni’ from Badda Police Station took position in front of the main gate of the shopping complex around 9:30am and barred the employees of the complex to enter the ground.

Four platoon police joined the demolition team lead by Deputy Commissioner Monir while Rajuk authorised officer-2 Shafiqul Islam representing the city developer’s side.

Another three Rajuk officials were also present on the scene to help Shafiqul.

The shopping complex authorities filed the writ petition on January 17 this year.

Earlier in January this year, Rajuk served the notice upon the authorities of Jamuna Future Park asking them to demolish the top four unauthorised floors of the shopping complex in the capital with a deadline of seven days.

Rajuk in the notice dated January 13 said the authorities of the shopping complex built a 10-storey building although they have an approved design for a six-storey one.
