February 7, 2010

No classes were held at Dhaka University on Sunday as Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) enforced a strike protesting the attack on its president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and the death of Abubakar Siddique during a BCL factional clash.

The presence of students was thin on the campus. However, examinations were held as per schedule.

JCD activists brought out a procession at about 9:00am but could not enter the campus through Shahbag and Nilkhet points as police obstructed them.

Chhatra League (BCL) brought out procession on the campus against the strike.

The JCD called the strike to realise their six-point demands, which also include stopping admission trade at educational institutions and ensuring co-existence of all political bodies on the campus.

Abubakar Siddique, a third year student Islamic History and Culture department and resident of Sir AF Rahman Hall, was critically injured on Tuesday’s BCL factional clash, died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) following day.

Earlier, on January 18, JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, among others, was injured in a factional clash of JCD on the Dhaka University campus.
