Cabinet okays new border guard law

March 1, 2010

The cabinet on Monday approved in principle the Border Guard Bangladesh Bill 2010, keeping a provision of capital punishment for offences like mutiny, killing and arson by the paramilitary forces.

A regular meeting of the cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair also formed a six-member high-powered committee for detailed analysis of the bill and asked it to submit the report in the next cabinet meeting.

The committee comprises prime minister’s advisers HT Imam and Moshiur Rahman, her principal secretary and the secretaries to the home and law ministries.

The bill was placed before the cabinet by the BDR headquarters through the home ministry.

“The restructuring of BDR is necessary for national interest and to keep the boarder safe,” PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad quoted the prime minister as telling the cabinet meeting.

The premier wants to formulate such an act so that killing in any discipline forces like Bangladesh Rifles come to an end forever, Azad told reporters after the meeting.

The meeting also approved Bangladesh Child Labour Prevention Policy 2010.
