Tarique, Koko, Patal face arrest

March 1, 2010

Two Dhaka courts on Monday issued arrest warrants against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s two sons–Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko– and former BNP state minister Fazlur Rahman Patal in three separate cases.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan Talukdar issued the arrest warrant against Tarique, also the BNP senior vice chairman, cancelling his bail petition in an extortion case.

Judge ANM Basir Ullah of the Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the arrest warrants against Koko and Patal few minutes after two separate tax evasion cases were filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) against them with the court.

Metropolitan magistrate passed the arrest warrant against Tarique as no step was taken on behalf of him on the day during the hearing of the case.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case had submitted chargesheet in the case and the High Court had vacated the stay order on the case.

The case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station in 2007 against Tarique for extorting Tk 10 crore.

The other court issued warrants against Koko and Patal after holding hearing on the cases.

NBR Deputy Tax Commissioner Shahin Akhter Hossain filed the case against Koko for dodging over Tk 52 lakh tax from fiscal 2002-2003 to 2006-2007.

On the other hand, Mijanur Rahman, the deputy tax commissioner of the NBR, filed another case against the former state minister as he dodged tax over Tk 26 lakh in the fiscal 2005-2006.
