Central bank unveils 5-yr strategic plan

The central bank Sunday announced its first five-year strategic plan aiming to add an impetus to the country’s economic development by brining in more people under the banking network.
“Financial inclusion is one of the key objectives of the strategic plan,” Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Atiur Rahman said while unveiling the plan document at a local hotel.
Compulsory primary education up to class 8

The government has approved a new national education policy with provision for free and compulsory primary schooling up to class eight.
The decision came from a weekly meeting of the cabinet on Monday chaired by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her press secretary Abul Kalam Azad told a briefing.

Bangladesh Bank has identified 17 strategies in its five-year plan to become a caring regulator for its stakeholders.
In the Strategic Plan 2010-2014, announced yesterday for the first time in its profile, the central bank has set its core focus on agriculture, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and financial inclusion.
A musical tribute to Nazrul

Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP), an organisation of Nazrul Sangeet singers, paid a tribute to the National Poet, through a two-day cultural programme (May 29-30) at the main auditorium of the National Museum.
“Every year we arrange a special programme on Nazrul’s birth anniversary, this year is no different,” said Sujit Mustafa, Nazrul artiste and joint secretary of NSSP.
BCL men now have to pay fine only

Disciplinary committee of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) has cancelled its earlier decision to expel 20 students, also activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), who were punished for involvement in anti-disciplinary activities on the campus.
However, the students, except one, will have to pay different amounts of fine, said a press release signed by PSTU Deputy Registrar Naser Saleh on Saturday evening.
Lift ban on Facebook

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students formed a human chain on the campus yesterday to protest the government decision to block the Facebook, a popular social networking website.
With a banner reading ‘Stop interference with the freedom of expression’, around 25 students staged the protest near the Aparajeyo Bangla at about 12:00 noon.
Storm kills 99 in Central America

The death toll in Central America from landslides and flooding triggered by the year’s first tropical storm surged to 99 on Sunday, as authorities struggled to clear roads of debris and reach cut-off communities.
Rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Agatha have pounded an area stretching from southern Mexico nearly to Nicaragua. They eased somewhat on Sunday, but rivers continued to rise and word of deaths from landslides was still filtering out from isolated areas.
Storm kills 2 in Noakhali

A woman and her 14-month-old daughter were killed and 20 others injured in house collapse during a storm that lashed Subarnachar and Hatia upazilas of Noakhali Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Saleha Katun, 30, wife of Kamaluddin of Char Torab Ali village in Subarnachar upazila, and her baby Sajeda Khatun, reports a correspondent from Noakhali.
Jamaat postpones rally

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has postponed their rally scheduled to be held at Paltan Maidan in the capital on Monday amid a ban imposed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
It also announced a separate programme in protest against the restriction imposed to refrain the party activists from holding any rally at Paltan Maidan.
