Workers halt granite extraction in Dinajpur
May 23, 2010
The production at Madhyapara Granite Mine Company Limited (MGMCL) in Dinajpur remains halted as its workers started an indefinite strike since Saturday midnight demanding job regularisation and arrears.
Meanwhile, the company authorities have offered talks with the demonstrators at about 3:00pm at its rest house. In reply, the leaders of the MGMCL miners union said they want to sit with the authorities at their workplace.
The strike, which was announced by The MGMCL Workers Employees Union on May 16, began at 12:00am, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Sources said a total of 292 workers staged demonstrations outside the company to press home their demands in the morning.
The company will have to incur a loss of around Tk 20 lakh everyday due to the strike, an official of the company said. He requested anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media.
Meanwhile, the workers, who have been working through an outsourcing company, earlier wrote a letter to the MGMCL that they would not continue their jobs with the outsourcing company from April 1 this year.
They demanded to be employed as the regular staff of the MGMCL, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Mustafizur Rahman, general secretary of the miners union, said they have due around Tk 2 crore to the company in arrears for one month and 22 days.
The workers have been demanding regularisation of their jobs since 2001, the workers’ union leaders said.
