50 hurt as police, RMG workers clash in N’ganj
June 1, 2010
At least 50 people, including 12 law enforcers, were injured in a clash between police and workers of a readymade garment at Kanchpur in Narayanganj Tuesday morning.
The clash ensued when the workers of SA Fashion & Apparels Limited put blockade on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and vandalised 10 to 12 vehicles and also set fire to a bus.
Officer-in-charge Mohammad Yunus Ali of Sonargaon Police Station said about 7,000 workers started demonstration at the factory at about 8:00am demanding immediate reinstatement of their fellow workers, who were terminated earlier by the authorities.
They damaged a number of windowpanes of the factory during the protest, reports our correspondent from Narayanganj.
The agitated workers then took to the street at about 9:00am and put blockade on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway near Nayabari area in Kanchpur to press home their demand, halting traffic movement on the busy highway.
On information, police rushed to the spot and charged truncheons on the workers that triggered a violent clash.
Police fired at least 20 teargas shells and 20 bullets to disperse the workers. They brought the situation under control after one hour.
A huge contingent of police personnel has been deployed in and around the area to avert any untoward incident.
The authorities of SA Fashion & Apparels Limited earlier sacked eight of its workers on charge of violating discipline at the factory.
The fellow workers of the factory have been demonstrating in protest against the termination for the last three days.
