‘Shadow budget indicates conspiracy’
June 28, 2010
Senior Awami League MP Suranjit Sengupta Sunday alleged in parliament that Khaleda Zia’s presentation of the shadow budget in a five-star hotel indicates another military-backed unconstitutional government.
He made the statement while delivering his speech on the proposed national budget in parliament.
“The Leader of the Opposition had placed her shadow budget ahead of announcing the national budget in a five star hotel instead of parliament,” said Sengupta.
“Do you want another 1/11? I see the symptoms of another 1/11,” he said referring to the Jan 11, 2007 when a interim government took over stewarded by the military and declared a state of emergency that remained in force for about two years.
“What is the meaning of placing budget in five-star hotel and calling hartals?”
Sengupta said Khaleda Zia violated the constitution and the global parliamentary norms and practices.
“The national flag given to Khaleda Zia has been given to the Leader of the Opposition in parliament, not to the Leader of the Opposition in the street,” he said.
The Awami League MP supported a big budget, saying, “How will we achieve growth without a big budget?”
He said the present government’s pro-farmer policies resulted in bumper production of boro.
“If we can maintain the constitutional continuity, Bangladesh will emerge as a food exporting country,” said Suranjit.
He requested the finance minister to waive the proposed tax on the savings certificates.
