Police obstruct BNP’s human chain programme

July 7, 2010

Police Wednesday morning obstructed the leaders and activists of opposition BNP from holding their scheduled human chain programme in the capital and Chittagong city.

The law enforcers barred the BNP central leaders in front of National Press Club at about 11:00am while they were trying to form a human chain.

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain, leaders Aman Ullah Aman and Chowdhury Kamal Ibn Yusuf were, among others, present there.

Later on, BNP senior joint secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, at a news conference at the party’s Naya Paltan office, alleged that police obstructed the leaders and workers from holding their programme across the country.

Police attacked them during the peaceful programme, he claimed.

In Chittagong, the leaders and activists tried to form human chains at Bohoddarhat, Dewanhat and different other points in the city but they were barred by the law enforcers.

BNP had earlier announced the one-hour human chain programme from 11:00am across the country demanding release of its leaders detained during the June 27 hartal.

Police on the day of hartal arrested a number of BNP leaders including Mirza Abbas, Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annee and Shamser Mobin Chowdhury.

BNP’s key ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami extended its support for the programme and asked its activists to make it a success.
