Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for a half an hour following the death of a fellow worker in a road accident near Targachha in Gazipur Sadar Upazila Wednesday morning.
They also vandalised 7 to 8 vehicles protesting the killing, reports a correspondent from Gazipur.
Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station, said Sujan Mia, 30, an knitting operator of Biswas Garment, was run over and killed by a bus when he was going to a mosque for Fazr prayer.
As the news spread, about 1,000 workers of the factory took to the highway and put barricade at about 8:00am demanding immediate construction of a foot over bridge on the spot.
Vehicular movements on the highway remained suspended following the incident, creating huge traffic jam on the both sides.
The workers withdrew the barricade at about 8:30am after getting an assurance from the local administration of constructing a foot over bridge on the spot as soon as possible.
The body was taken to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
