Shibir central leader held in Rajshahi

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has arrested a central leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir at Paramedical Road in Rajshahi city in connection with a case filed for his ‘direct involvement’ with carrying out subversive activities.

The members of the elite force arrested M Golam Mortuza, social welfare and cultural affairs secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami backed student organisation Shibir, early Sunday, a Rab press release said Sunday night.

Mortuza is a top criminal on Rab’s wanted list, our Rajshahi staff correspondent said.

Mortuza is accused of more than one criminal cases filed with the capital’s Mohammadpur Police Station.

The arrest was made when a petrol team of Rab during Sehri hours challenged two people, who were wandering suspiciously on the road near a coaching center and sensing elite forces presence started flee the scene.

Rab members managed to catch Mortuza chasing him, the press release said.

According to the Rab release, the four Shibir men who were arrested with arms and explosives on August 3 from the capital’s Mohammadpur area disclosed the name of Mortuza as their partner.

Mortuza had managed to flee the Rab raid at the Shibir students’ mess at Mohammadpur on the day.

Mortuza divulged to the elite force that he and some armed Shibir men were assigned to reorganising Shibir leaders and activists across the country who are afraid of recent crackdown on them.

He also admitted to Rab that he directed the arrested Shibir cadres of Dhaka for storing the recovered arms and explosives for using those at different processions and meetings.

He was handed over to Rajpara police in Rajshahi following his arrest in connection with the case.
