Anthrax hits Nilphamari, 2 detected

The government has detected the first case of human anthrax in Nilphamari.
The infection of Shamsuzzaman Likhon, 19, of Nijpara village under Mirganj Union, and Sumaiya Jaman Asha, 4, of Chowdhurypara village under Golmunda Union of Jaldhaka Upazila – were detected on Saturday.
Hasina urges special fund for LDCs

Pabna Awami League cadres jailed

A Pabna court has sent to jail 21 pro-government activists accused of vandalism at a test for recruiting clerks after they surrendered.
Leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jatiya Juba League—the student and youth fronts of the ruling Awami League—surrendered to the Judicial Magistrate’s Court at about 11:30am on Sunday.
Magistrate Laila Sharmin, after hearing the case, ordered them to be sent to jail.
They were taken to the prison at noon.
Meanwhile, the activists of both the organisations declared they would not lay siege on the deputy commissioner’s office on Sunday, as had been planned earlier, local leaders said.
Chhatra League and Juba League adherents have been largely accused of foiling a test for recruiting clerks for the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office, vandalism and assault of government officers on September 17.
At least 15 people, including additional deputy commissioner Bijay Bhushan Paul and some candidates, were injured.
The unruly people allegedly went on a rampage through two examination centres ay Pabna Zilla School and Government Girls’ High School and vandalised at least four vehicles, belonging to some top officials.
On the same day, Pabna district administration executive magistrates Sarwar Alam and Moinul Hossain filed two cases with Pabna Sadar police under the Speedy Trial Act against 32 pro-government activists. Police arrested five activists over the incident.
Pabna Sadar police chief Badruddoza said that a charge-sheet accusing 32 activists of the Awami League’s youth and student wings have been prepared for two cases under the speedy trial act.

PM tells UN of war crimes trial

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday formally raised the issue of trial of war criminals at the United Nations, saying the International Crimes Tribunal has been set up to try persons responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
“This action is in accordance with the rule of law as reflected in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which we have ratified and which aims at bringing to justice the perpetrators of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity,” Hasina said in her speech at the world body.
